Confidence
Why is confidence important in the healthcare industry?
Yes, you might already know that it is essential to build confidence to get ahead, but as healthcare professionals, WHY do we need it?
In a study by Owens and Keller (2018), they found that confidence of the healthcare professional improved overall patient experience. They identified three implications for this:
First impressions matter. Patients are reassured that they are in good hands if they see that they can trust and respect you.
When you believe that you can cope with a challenging task, you are less likely to experience stress and anxiety.
Confidence is NOT a substitute for competency. It is important to create experiences that support workforce development and improve competencies.
By building your confidence as a healthcare professional, you will be able to:
Build rapport with your patients
Communicate better with colleagues and seniors
Strengthen your professional performance
At this point you may know you need it, but you may still be reluctant about putting yourself in uncomfortable situations because they force out your insecurities.
However, stepping out of your comfort zone is a step in the right direction! Remember, building your confidence is a process, it isn’t done overnight. :)
Confidence isn’t delivered to you, you must take action to build it yourself.
