Communication in the Workplace

Have you ever struggled with communication in the workplace?

Do you often find your message “lost in translation”

You are not alone because MISUNDERSTANDINGS and MISCOMMUNICATIONS are a common source of frustration for most!

Our initial reaction would be to BLAME the other person for these. However, from now on, I want you to shift your mindset into thinking that it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to communicate effectively. If you’re not getting the results you desire, then you must find a way to communicate better.

Surprisingly, the biggest factor in ineffective communication is the knowledge we possess! What do I mean by this?

The experiences and lessons you have had in your life and career can help you assess a situation and find a solution. You relay this message, but it doesn’t mean that others will reach the same conclusion as you because they have different experiences and perspectives.

I know it’s impossible to ignore the knowledge in your head, but you can take some steps to improve the clarity of your message.

Here are 4 ways you can improve how you communicate:

  1. Make your point CLEAR

    • Don’t assume that people understand what you mean. Remember that they have their own map of the world and filter what you say though their own biases and perspectives. Prioritize clarity over subtlety or cleverness!

  2. Exercise letting your thoughts be heard

    • Communication can be fragile. When people don’t understand the logic behind your thought process, the intent can be misunderstood. So instead of running the debate inside your head, try to discuss it with other people so they can build off of your process and thinking.

  3. Be sincere in listening

    • The important thing is that you CARE. You care more about their thoughts than the voice inside your head. Listen to UNDERSTAND, not to reply.

  4. Be HUMAN

    • Be accommodating so that others won’t feel that you’ll think less of them if they admit their confusion. Always think that if your message didn’t come across correctly, it’s your responsibility to communicate better!

Remember, COMMUNICATION IS AN ART. In order to create beautiful works of art, you have to use the right tools. Similar to this, in communication you must use these tools: RIGHT WORDS, RIGHT TONE, and RIGHT GESTURE.

Do you think you can apply these 4 steps to improve your communication?
